IND vs NED: India look to enter Super Eight with a perfect group stage record

A rampant India will look to round off their group-stage campaign with a perfect record when they face the Netherlands in their final league fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday, before shifting focus to the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The India vs Netherlands group clash will get underway at 7 pm IST. JioHotstar will offer livestreaming, while Star Sports will provide TV coverage of the match in India.

An emphatic 61-run victory over Pakistan secured India’s passage to the next round, allowing Suryakumar Yadav’s side to approach their final Group A fixture with a degree of comfort. The contest, however, is far from a dead rubber. A heavyweight clash against South Africa awaits on Sunday in a repeat of the previous edition’s final, making the game an ideal opportunity to fine-tune combinations and address lingering concerns.

For India, much of the focus will remain on Abhishek Sharma. The 25-year-old has endured a stop-start campaign, but inspiration is close at hand in the form of opening partner Ishan Kishan, who has been in imperious touch. Should some of Kishan’s fluency rub off on the middle order, India would be considerably strengthened.

One of the most feared batters in the format over the past 18 months, Abhishek is yet to ignite in his maiden ICC event at home. A duck in the tournament opener was followed by a bout of illness that ruled him out against Namibia. He returned for the high-stakes clash against Pakistan but endured another failure, leaving India waiting for their young opener to stamp his authority on the competition.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma handled Pakistan’s spinners sensibly on a tricky Colombo pitch, but India’s larger struggle against spin remains a worry. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus explored that weakness with figures of 4 for 20, and India currently have the lowest average and run rate against spin among the top-ranked teams in the tournament.

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has indicated that Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to be rested, even with qualification secured. Bumrah’s spell against Pakistan, which included the key wickets of Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha, effectively ended the contest. His workload has been managed carefully, but India seems keen to keep their spearhead in rhythm ahead of the Super Eight.

The bowling unit as a whole has been sharp. Conditions in Ahmedabad could encourage a slight change in combination, with the management considering an extra seamer such as Arshdeep Singh in place of Kuldeep Yadav.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, are no pushover. They stunned South Africa and Bangladesh during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and have repeatedly shown the ability to punch above their weight on the global stage. Progression is no longer in their hands, as they require favourable results elsewhere, including a Namibian upset over Pakistan, but they have already demonstrated that they are far more than mere participants.

The Dutch attack offers variety and subtlety. Logan van Beek and Bas de Leede are adept at mixing their pace, Fred Klaassen provides a left-arm angle, while Aryan Dutt’s PowerPlay off-spin and the evergreen Roelof van der Merwe add further dimensions. For India, it represents a valuable rehearsal against diverse bowling options before sterner examinations begin.

If India win the toss, they are likely to bat first and make the most of the favourable night conditions to push for a substantial total. The Netherlands, on the other hand, will have a decision to make. They can opt to chase, which has often been the preferred approach in Ahmedabad, or look to bowl first and try to prevent India from setting a daunting target.

IND vs NED: AHMEDABAD PITCH CONDITIONS

Ahmedabad has been a high-scoring venue so far. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, South Africa scored 213 in one night game, while New Zealand’s 175 in another proved far from enough. The pitch has largely favoured batters, and a similar surface is expected for India’s clash against the Netherlands.

IND vs NED: HEAD-TO-HEAD

India and the Netherlands have met only once in T20 Internationals. India secured a comfortable 56-run win in their previous meeting at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Sydney.

IND vs NED: PREDICTED PLAYING XIs

Barring Harshit Rana’s last-minute injury withdrawal, India have resolved all other availability concerns. The only likely change is bringing back Arshdeep Singh in place of Kuldeep Yadav on the quicker Ahmedabad pitch.

India (Predicted XI): Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy.

Netherlands have rotated Timm van der Gugten and Kyle Klein in their first three games. Paul van Meekeren has featured only once, with Fred Klaasen coming in as the left-arm option. They will likely pick two of the three pacers.

Netherlands (Predicted XI): Michael Levitt, Max O’Dowd, Bas de Leede, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards (capt & wk), Zach Lion-Cachet, Logan van Beek, Aryan Dutt, Roelof van der Merwe, and two of Kyle Klein, Fred Klaassen and Paul van Meekeren.
